Consumer prices rose 3.4% in the 12 months through April 2024, down from 3.5% in March. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, ran 3.6%. The CPI-U index stood at 313.548, a 0.4% change from the prior month (not seasonally adjusted).

Over the twelve months ending April 2024, prices rose fastest in motor vehicle insurance (22.6%), owners' equivalent rent (5.8%), shelter (5.5%), while used cars and trucks prices fell (-6.9%).
