Between 1955 and 2003, the Consumer Price Index went from 26.8 to 184. Cumulatively, prices increased 586.6%, which works out to an average of 4.10% per year. Put differently, a dollar in 1955 bought what $0.15 buys in 2003.
Consumer prices fell 0.4% in 1955, the first annual decline since 1949, as a strong rebound from the 1953-54 recession delivered growth without much price pressure; automakers and appliance makers competed hard on price for a booming consumer market. Consumer prices finished 1955 170.7% above their 1913 level, essentially unchanged from where they stood a year earlier. First-class postage held at 3 cents, and the minimum wage stayed at 75 cents an hour.
